Create Symantec NetBackup 7.5 Bare Metal Restore Boot CD


Boot CD must be created to restore the backup for doing bare metal restore, boot CD helps to restore the backup without having the operating system or software installed on the target machine. It also provides automatic recovery of data without user intervention. Automatic restoration can be done by creating the CD after executing the prepare to restore, otherwise you can do normal restore ( You need to select the configuration that you want to restore). Here i will be doing automatic restoration of machine, so prepare your machine for similar or dis-similar restore.

Run the Boot Server Assistant.

Start –> All Programs –> Symantec NetBackup –> BMR Boot Server Assistant. Select Shared Resource Tree Administration Wizard.

Click Next on Welcome Page.

Select Create a Bootable CD/DVD from a shared resource tree and then click next.

Select the shared resource tree to turn into Bootable CD, you should select the same shared resource tree that you have previously used for preparing to restore.

Select the path to save the boot cd, if you have performed prepare to restore; the client list will be displayed below. This clients will be restored automatically with this boot cd, if none is present; you need to perform manual restoration of clients.

Boot cd is also act as shared resource tree, enter the name and description. Click next to create.

Now you can proceed for restoration.

Create Backup Policy Symantec NetBackup 7.5 – Windows


Backup policy has to be created to backing up the client data over the network, before crating a policy; install Symantec NetBackup 7.5 client on remote machine. While doing the post configuring it might ask you to create data backup policy or you can create new backup policy from admin console.

Backup policy can be created from Admin Console.

From the previous tutorial Configuring the Catalog policy. Click Next to Create data backup policy.

Select appropriate policy for,  you can select any one according to the requirement. File System, database, application  is to be selected for normal data backup.

Type policy name and select  MS-Windows to backup the remote windows machine.

Next is to add the clients to this backup policy, Click on Add .

Click on Computer icon at the right end to browse the clients.

 

Select the client.

It will lists the added client, multiple client can be added by doing previous step. Click Next.

Now it’s the time to add  files and folders to this backup policy, click on Add.

Click on Folder icon at the right end to browse the files and folders on the remote machine;

Select remote folder that you want to backup and then click OK.

Multiple folders can be added by doing previous step, once added click Next.

Select Full backup with deferential incremental backup.

Select the frequency of backup, as per below; full backup will happen every week and increment backup will happen daily. Full backup will be kept for one week where as incremental backup will be kept up to two week and it will be over written after those time limit.

Set the schedule of backup, as per below configuration backup will be happen at 3 PM.

Click on Finish.

Now you have successfully configured data backup policy on Symantec NetBackup 7.5.

Extras:

This following  is applicable to the post installation configuration of Symantec NetBackup 7.5 (ie it will ask you for one time when you are starting the admin console after the installation of NetBackup).

You no need to wait to test the backup. after the creation of data backup policy, Symantec has the inbuilt testing mechanism to test the backup. Click next.

Don’t do anything, click next.

Finish the post installation setup.

Now go to the activity monitor to check the test backup.

That’s all you have successfully backed up the test files, original backup will start automatically on scheduled time; can be monitored using this activity monitor window. Finally you have finished installation,post configuration and created the backup polices, backup can be managed by using admin console.

Know About Catalog Backup


Catalog backup are required to protect Netbackup internal databases. The catalog contains setup information as well as critical information about client backup and thus it is very important to protect them. They are tracked separately from other backups to ensure recovery in case of server crash. Backup information includes records of the files that have been backed up and the media on which the files are stored. The catalogs also contain information about the media and the storage devices.

To restore any file Netbackup needs information from the catalog to determine where the backup for the file is located. Without a catalog, NetBackup cannot restore data. This catalog backup is configured using catalog backup wizard in netbackup tool and backup backs up catalog-specific data as well as produces disaster recovery information.

Note: This backup is configured separately from regular client backups.

Types of Catalog Backup

There are basically 2 types of catalog backup, which are explained below.

1. Offline or cold Catalog Backup :

Offline catalog backup are backup which runs after all the backup are completed and it should not be run when regular backup activity occurs. Offline, cold catalog backups use media from the NetBackup volume pool only.

2. Online or hot Catalog Backup :

These backup run in active environment when other backup are running. The online catalog is policy-based, which means that it has all of the scheduling flexibility of a regular backup policy. Online, hot catalog backups use media from the Catalog Backup volume pool only.

How to Run Inventory in Netbackup 6.5


In simple definition Inventory is a list of goods on hand or a catalog of all the items in house. Inventory in any backup tools plays a very important part. Whenever insertion and removal of any tape and media takes place, we have to run the inventory, so that our tape database is upto-date and backup tool only picks tape available for backup, otherwise backup may fail. This tutorial will tell you how to run inventory in Symantec Netbackup tool 6.5.

Whenever tapes are removed physically from any storage system, they must also be removed logically to ensure proper backup of the client server’s. Inventory run’s on master backup server when tape removal and insertion activity happens. To run inventory in Netbackup 6.5 we have to follow the below simple steps.

1. Login to your master server through Remote desktop tool and then login to your Netbackup 6.5 administration console.

2. Now in Media and Device management go to Media.

3. In Media, you have to Robots and then TLD as shown below.

The above path can be summarized as Media and Device management > Media > Robots > TLD

4. Now right click on TLD and click on Inventory Robot as shown below.

5. Once you have click on Inventory Robot, click on start, which will scan for new tape/media in the library. If there are new tapes inserted in library, then you will see list of all the tape below propose change to update the volume configuration. If there are no new tapes, then you will see the message Volume configuration is up-to-date as shown in below screenshot.

Once your inventory is update just click on close. Now you can search for newly inserted tapes and media in Tape library.

Command to Run Inventory in Netbackup Tool

We have just learn the method to run the inventory through GUI but you can also do same thing through writing a command in the command prompt. The command for running the inventory in netbackup tool is

vmphyinv -rn [robot_number] -rh [robot_control_host] -slot_range [from] [to] -d [density]
