Using Windows Basic Encryption



Section 0. Background Information
  • In this lab. 
    • In this lab, the user teamlead we will encrypt a file using Windows basic encryption.
    • Then the user manager will unsuccessfully try to open the encrypt file.

     

Section 1. Login to your W2K8 server.
  1. Start your Windows 2008 Server
    • Instructions
      1. Click on W2K8 Server
      2. Click on Play virtual machine

     

  2. CRTL + ALT + DELETE
    • Instructions
      1. Virtual Machine
      2. Send Ctrl+Alt+Del

     

  3. Login as Administrator
    • Instruction:
      1. Click on the Switch User Button.

     

  4. Other User
    • Instruction:
      1. Click on Other User

     

  5. Other User
    • Instruction:
      1. Login as teamlead
      2. Use the standard classroom password.

 

Section 2. Create a Folder, File and Apply Encryption
  1. Bring Up Computer (a.k.a., Windows Explorer)
    • Instructions:
      1. Start –> Computer

     

  2. Select the C: Drive
    • Instructions:
      1. Double Click on “Local Disk (C:)”

     

  3. Create a New Folder
    • Instructions:
      1. File –> New –> Folder

     

  4. Create a folder named “OPERATIONS”
    • Instructions:
      1. Type OPERATIONS

     

  5. Enter the “OPERATIONS” folder
    • Instructions:
      1. Right Click on the OPERATION folder
      2. Select Open

     

  6. Create a Text Document.
    • Instructions:
      1. File –> New –> Text Document

     

  7. Naming the file teamlead-encrypted-file
    • Instructions:
      1. Name the file teamlead-encrypted-file
      2. Hit Enter

     

  8. Open the file teamlead-encrypted-file
    • Instructions:
      1. Right click on teamlead-encrypted-file
      2. Click on Open

     

  9. Enter text and save the file.
    • Instructions:
      1. Enter some text in the file.
      2. File –> Save

     

  10. Open the file properties
    • Instructions:
      1. Right Click on the file teamlead-encrypted-file.txt
      2. Select Properties

     

  11. Click on the Advanced… button
    • Instructions:
      1. Click on the Advanced… button

     

  12. Encrypt the file contents
    • Instructions:
      1. Click on the “Encrypt contents to secure data” check box.
      2. Click the OK button

     

  13. Apply File Encryption
    • Instructions:
      1. Click Apply

     

  14. Encrypt the file only
    • Instructions:
      1. Click the “Encrypt the file only” radio button
      2. Click the OK Button

     

  15. Select the OK Button
    • Instructions:
      1. Click on the OK Button

     

  16. Select the OK Button
    • Note:
      • Notice the text color of the filename is now in green to show that the file is encrypted.

 

Section 3. See if user manager can view the encrypted file
  1. Switch User
    • Instructions:
      1. Start –> Switch User

     

  2. Log On
    • Instructions:
      1. Virtual Machine –> Send Ctrl+Alt+Del

     

  3. Select Other User
    • Instructions:
      1. Click on the Other User icon.

     

  4. Select Other User
    • Instructions:
      1. Login as manager
      2. The Password is the standard classroom password.
      3. Click the Blue Arrow next to the password box.

     

  5. Bring up Computer (a.k.a., Windows Explorer)
    • Instructions:
      1. Start –> Computer

     

  6. Select the C: Drive
    • Instructions:
      1. Double Click on “Local Disk (C:)”

     

  7. Get into the OPERATIONS folder
    • Instructions:
      1. Double Click on the OPERATIONS folder

     

  8. Try to open the teamlead-encrypted-file.txt
    • Instructions:
      1. Right click on the file
      2. Click on Open

     

  9. Access is denied Message in Windows
    • Note:
      • Notice that user manager cannot view a file encrypted by user teamlead.

     

  10. Access Denied Message in DOS
    • Instructions:
      1. Start –> Command Prompt
      2. cd C:\OPERATIONS
      3. dir
      4. type teamlead-encrypted-file.txt
      5. date #Press Enter Twice
      6. echo “Your Name”
        • Replace “Your Name” with your actual name.
        • E.g., echo “John Gray”
    • Proof of Lab
      1. Do a PrtScn
      2. Paste into a word document
      3. Upload to Moodle.
