Description
  • When VSS creates a shadow copy the following VSS error 8193 is logged to the Windows Application log:

    Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine ConvertStringSidToSid(S-1-5-21-1594437928-2122080341-1231754661-4183.bak). hr = 0x80070539, The security ID structure is invalid.

       Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Event ID :8193

  • Cause

    This error is caused by an invalid SID located in HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

    Resolution

    WORKAROUND:

    1. Open Regedit on the machine experiencing the error
    2. Browse to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
    3. Find the value that ends in “.bak”
    4. Make a backup of that registry entry
    5. Delete the registry entry
    6. Reboot the server
